An introduction to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and why it is crucial

Electromagnetic Compatibility, abbreviated as EMC, focuses on analyzing and optimizing the unintended effects produced by the generation, transmission, and unintentional reception of electromagnetic energy. The goal is to ensure the correct functioning of various electrical/electronic devices in the same operational environment.

In line with the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU and the UN/ECE R10 Regulation (Automotive), all apparatus employing electrical and/or electronic components potentially susceptible to electromagnetic disturbances (immunity requirements) and/or capable of causing disturbance (emission requirements) in the same electromagnetic environment must undergo experimental verification. This involves EMC testing, consisting of immunity tests and emission measurements, conducted directly on the product sample.

The EMC Lab and the Anechoic Chamber

Location and Facilities
Established in 2021, Sitael S.p.A.’s EMC laboratory is located in Mola di Bari, at Via San Sabino n.21. The lab offers electromagnetic compatibility testing services and features a large, full-compliance semi-anechoic chamber, equipped with the necessary instruments for conducting immunity tests and emission measurements (radiated and conducted) on equipment (powered by DC and/or single/three-phase AC), in compliance with major EMC standards (railway, satellite, industrial).

Testing and Certification
The lab also performs pre-compliance on-site tests on railway vehicles according to EN 50121-3-1. All instruments undergo periodic calibration and are traceable to nationally recognized standards in accordance with UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025.

The objective of EMC testing is to verify that the device under test (commonly referred to as EUT – Equipment Under Test) complies with the emission limits and susceptibility criteria indicated in applicable technical standards.

Testing Capabilities Highlights

The laboratory performs tests in full compliance with the main standards:

  • Radiated emission according to CISPR 32, CISPR 11, CISPR-2-3, CISPR 25, CISPR 12, ECSS-E-ST-20-07C (5.4.6);
  • Radiated emission on site on Railway Vehicle according to EN 50121-3-1;
  • Conducted emission according to CISPR 32, CISPR 11, CISPR 16-2-1, ECSS-E-ST-20-07C (5.4.2, 5.4.3, 5.4.4);
  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD) immunity test according to EN 61000-4-2, ECSS-E-ST-20-07C (5.4.12);
  • Radiated immunity test according to EN 61000-4-3, ECSS-E-ST-20-07C (5.4.10, 5.4.11), ISO 11452-2, ISO 11452-8;
  • Electrical transient/fast transient immunity test (EFT/burst) according to EN 61000-4-4;
  • Impulse immunity test (surge) according to EN 61000-4-5;
  • Immunity test conducted according to EN 61000-4-6, ECSS-E-ST-20-07C (5.4.7, 5.4.8) ISO 11452-4, ISO 11452-10;
  • Mains frequency magnetic field immunity test according to EN 61000-4-8;
  • Impulsive magnetic field immunity test to EN 61000-4-9;
  • Immunity test to voltage dips, interruptions and variations according to EN 61000-4-11, EN 61000-4-29, EN 61000-4-34.

Sitael implements a quality management system meeting UNI EN ISO 9001:2015 requirements. Since 2023, the scope of certification includes the provision of EMC testing services.

The laboratory has undertaken the 17025 accreditation route as a testing laboratory for the following standards:

  • EN 50121-3-2:2016 ‘Railway applications – Electromagnetic compatibility – Part 3-2: Rolling stock – Apparatus’ for Radiated and conducted emissions testing only;
  • EN 50121-3-1:2016 ‘Railway applications – Electromagnetic compatibility – Part 3-2: Rolling stock – Train and complete vehicle’;

With the aim of later extending the accreditation to fully cover EN 50121-3-2.

Why choosing our EMC Laboratory

It is possible to perform EMC tests on large EUTs (Equipment Under Test) thanks to direct access to the SAC (semi-anechoic chamber) through a large door (3m x 3m) with no architectural barriers and equipped with a suitable electromechanical platform that aligns the floor of the chamber with the level of the external environment. For this purpose, the SAC is equipped with a Turndisk with a diameter of 4m and a load capacity of 4000 kg.

The radiated emission measurement can be performed at two different distances, 3 and 5 metres, both validated by NSA (Normalized Site Attenuation) tests in the 30MHz÷ 1GHz range and SVSWR (Site Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) tests in the 1÷18GHz range, which allow a measurement in compliance with EMC standards.

The SAC is equipped with a CCTV system to monitor the status and operation of the EUT during RF immunity tests (both radiated and conducted) where high levels of electromagnetic disturbance are sometimes produced from the point of view of human exposure, so as to guarantee the absolute safety of both operators and users.

Finally, the SAC has an assorted penetration panel that allows the EUT to be interfaced with any AE (Auxillary Equipment) and a DC filter up to 32 A, in addition to the provision of no. 2 filters for internal AC single/three phase supplies up to 63 A.

Each type of connection distinctly reaches both the turndisk and the area dedicated to the conducted tests, in addition to those used for the normal operation of the equipment used during the tests (antenna, mast antenna, turndisk and CCTV).

Complaint processing involves the following activities:

  • examination and assessment that the complaint is attributable to activities for which the Laboratory is responsible;
  • registration of the complaint through the MOD LAB NCR – Non-Compliance Report and AC of the Laboratory;
  • identification of the causes and actions necessary for the treatment and correction of the same;
  • verification of implementation and effectiveness of actions taken;
  • active maintenance of communication channels with the complainant, indicating confirmation of receipt of the complaint, processing time, actions for resolution of the same and its status.
